BURLINGTON, VT — Fans of the CBU’s Burlington Phishheads celebrated long into the night after hearing the stunning news that their team had captured the offseason’s most-prized free agent, Earl Grant.
Grant, a 26-year-old righthander, was among the league’s top pitchers last season. Although several other ace starters were also available, Grant is several years younger than most of the rest of the prime free agents.
That played a big role in the team’s decision to throw an enormous, 5-year, $29 million per year salary at the pitcher, with the fifth year …

BURLINGTON, VT — The Phishheads made catcher Josh Whitford, 26, their initial free agent pickup of the offseason, signing him to a minor-league contract. The team said it sees Whitford as a one- or possibly two-year backup catcher.
It’s a clear signal the team has committed to 24-year-old Angel Cruz as its No. 1 receiver for at least the near future, confirmed by GM Larry Hockett.
Hockett said that despite Cruz’s failings in the batter’s box (.195 with 2 homers and struck out 88 times in 302 AB), his defense was good …

(PRINCETON, NJ) – In what many consider an extremely questionable move, the Princeton Black Squirrels have announced that they have signed 32-year old catcher Ralph Petley to a one year contract worth a reported $2.5 million for the 2010 season. The veteran Petley, who declined arbitration from Princeton to become a free agent after the season, was one of the main reasons that the AAA level Woodbridge Ratdogs enjoyed such a successful season in 2009. Petley hit .314 with a 1.030 OPS in 77 games with the Ratdogs, blasting …

Only weeks past since Orlando handed Sioux Falls its one way ticket out of CBU history, the Uber Giraffes remain very active off the field. There were many matters of business to attend. Javier Esquivel, Will Hill, Masaki Kurota, and Mike Lovell all remained unsigned. Don’t forget that role players Mario Lefebrve, Javier De Los Santos, Derrick Gilmore also remained lurking for 2010 contracts.
Sioux Falls aimed to tackle one out of that list and they finally came to terms with their LL All-Star 2B Javier Esquivel. Esquivel after his hot …

(Crest Hill, IL) – One of the most bizarre stories to come out of the CBU’s first season is the tale of 34-year old second baseman Kurt Taylor. Initially selected by the Nashville Apostles in the Classic Baseball Union’s inaugural draft, the left-handed hitting Taylor struggled to make an impact in Music City, batting .210 with a .589 OPS, 1 HR and 21 RBI in 195 at bats. Taylor started 52 games at second base for the Apostles and even emergency subbed at catcher twice. At the beginning of July …
