August 25, 2018 – The mood was set early, and John Helms made news when he  was perfect tonight. Helms (11-5 3.46 ERA) started the game off by strking out Félix González then getting the next two batters to ground out and fly out respectively.

Eight innings later, the Swashbucklers attempting to refuse the embarrassment of being held from getting on base sent up José Morín with one out in the 9th inning and asked him to bunt for a hit. In a hustling play Pat Jones crashed in from 3rd base and made a high light play throwing in a mid dive to get the hitter out saving the perfect game. After some heckling between playe

rs and a mean stare from Helms himself, Helms regained his composure as Savannah sent up a pinch hitter.

For the final out of the game Helms pasted a screwball that buckled Henry Miller, causing him to fly a can of corn to center fielder Dave Tucker. The Indianapolis player piled on Helms just in front of the pitching mound with their 6-0 (Boxscore) win completed. The Savannah home crowd stood and clapped the performance that Helms showed them.

“When I let go of the fastball, I saw Morin squaring to bunt, and thankfully Jones was breaking towards home already. I should have been expecting some sort of bush league play like that, but I didn’t. Jones picked me up, and the guys behind me tonight deserve this as much as I do.” ~John Helms

Helms’ effort was the second recorded perfect game in the Classic Baseball Union history. Adam Smith was the first to do it back in 2012. This performance also qualifies as the 27th no-hitter in the league’s history.
