The CBU completes new TV Deal worth five billion dollars
January, 1 2002 – Its a late Christmas for all CBU fans. They will be pleased to know that the CBU has completed a deal worth five billion dollars for the TV rights to all CBU baseball games over the next 10 years with Fox Sports Networks. Before the deal, the CBU would average roughly $300 million in National TV revenue. This deal with Fox Sports will increase funds to $500 million a year.
Higher offers from ESPN, NBC Sports and CBS Sports were recieved, but the Fox Sports networked included sponsorship marketing for the various charities and organizations supported by the CBU, which helped make the deal between the two entities make so much sense.
Major League Baseball declined to comment on the completion of the deal as the TV rights remain owned by the individual teams which limits the bargaining power that the league can use.
This deal will get Classic Baseball Union profits back in the right direction. All owners had seem great returns on their initial investments and with this deal the CBU will be around for much longer than the 10 year promise that the ownership group promised back in 1994. However, the buzz has simmered in the last four seasons, causing a slow down in CBU charitable endeavors.
This deal should revitalize those campaigns, and also strengthen those already started in the last decade. The CBU commissioner and owner circle were seen celebrating with several personalities, as their lofty dreams to compete with the MLB are becoming reality.
