The Brooklyn Blue Sox net their second CBU Championship
October 25th, 2001 – Perhaps its best to not win your division in the CBU. For the third straight season a wild card team won the league’s top prize. Brooklyn who bowed out early in the previous two season despite winning their division had to settle for 2nd place in the regular season after losing the division crown by one game to the Charlotte Webs.
The two divisional rivals would meet in the first round of the playoffs and take it all the way to game seven, to which was only decided by one run as Brooklyn lucked out by winning 8-7. The Durham Dragons were next on the task list for Brooklyn, but with home field advantage the Blue Sox were moving onto their second CBU Championship trip in six games.
The Blue Sox would square off against the Sioux Falls Underdogs. The Underdogs had the best record in all of the CBU, but could not even manage to win a single game agains the Blue Sox. The Sox scored no less than 5 runs in all four games as they coasted to victory and were able to celebrate in front of their home fans.
The Brooklyn Blue Sox were led by right handed starter Jack Watkins and lefty starter Claudio Meza. The Sox also had a slugging line up that featured five guys who had over 27 home runs on the season. 3B Earl Galloway led the way with 30, 2B Will Edwards followed with 29, catcher Harry Duffy, and outfielders Ed Norbury & Tony Hodges both had 27.
This championship puts another mark on the board for the Giamatti League. This marks the GL’s 3rd World Series title, but they trail behind the Landis League who has five championships.
