Savannah Swashbucklers
October 29th, 2013: It was Savannah and Redbank challenging one other in the 2013 The CBU Championship Series this season. On paper, there wasn’t much difference between the two strong ballclubs, but on the field, the verdict went to the Swashbucklers.
It was the 2nd for the Giamatti League champions. They defeated the Bandits 4-3 in the series, winning the last game today by a 2-0 score. The new champs finished the regular season 89-73 and claimed third place in the Giamatti League Veeck Division pennant race.
The Swashbucklers were led by right-hander Jason Coffey who went 20-9 in 2013 with a 2.88 ERA. Coffey led a pitching staff that was first in ERA, runs allowed, hits allowed, opponents average, and home runs allowed. They were also second in team defense and walks allowed.
In Savannah, the line up was led by right fielder Peter Hill who carved out a .282, 30-home run, and 96 RBI season. Also short stop Wilbert Whaley turned up a great season to hit behind Hill, his .320 average and 19 homers also kept Savannah riding high.
The Savannah Swashbucklers are two for two in CBU Champioinships. This marks the 7th championship for a Giamatti League team, in the 20 years of CBU play.
