Martin Johnston was drafted by the Greene Monsters with the 4th pick in the 14th round of the inaugural draft. Halfway through the 1994 season, Johnston was traded to Brainerd along with cash for two prospects. That year between the two teams he hit .288 with 21 homeruns and 94 runs batted in.
1995 was the career highlight for the 35-year-old veteran. Johnston hit 18 homers, with a .317 average and 113 RBIs. Johnston also made his first and only All-Star  appearance.
After the 1995 season, Brainerd choose not to renew his contract, but Rapid City ofered him 33 million dollars for his 36, 37, and 38 year-old seasons. Johnston consistently produced for Rapid City as he hit 15 home runs in each of the three years. He hit .287 in that time period and added 204 RBI’s to his resume.
In 1999 the 39-year-old signed with Vermont to play in a reserve role for the season. The lefty hit 6 more homers in 183 at bats. Despite joining the CBU as a 34-year-old, he played six seasons of good baseball. He hit 90 career homers, had a .288 career batting average, and drove in 322 RBIs. He was also above average for his defense in right field.
