Parasites feast on Murderer’s Row for first Championship

October 27th, 2002 – The Portland Parasites are celebrating after taking two straight from Augusta in Augusta to win the CBU series in seven games. The Parasites have never won a Division title in their 9 year run in the CBU, but they can now call themselves CBU champions after climbing over Sioux Falls, and Brainered in the Landis League and outlasting the Giamatti representitives in seven games.

Joey Brown - 1B

The Parasites finished 3rd in the division with 95 wins, and finished behind powerhouses Sioux Falls and Denver who had 107 and 103 wins respectively. But in the CBU its about how you play in October, and the Parasites sat back and struck at the right time.

The Parasites finished first in the Landis League in batting average, OBP, hits and striking out the least. On the flip side their pitching staff was first in strikeouts. The Parasites were led by Joey Brown who started every game at 1st base for the Parasites. He aslo hit 51 home runs and batted in 142 runners in 2002.

Despite the championship the Parasites were the definition of team. The Parasites were only represented by two players in the 2002 all star team (Brown & SP Lance Corbin) and only catcher Vic Brewster won post-season hardware by securing the Brooks Robinson Award for catchers. The team play was no doubt inspired by the laziness and apathy that runs rampant in Oregon. Despite the massive talent on the roster, only Joey Brown could muster up enough energy to put together any type of decent season.
