Johnston Honored by Houston Sportswriters
Houston (AP) – For years, folks in Galveston have argued that the better brand of baseball was played at the southern end of I-45. As attendance continues to rise at Bayhawks games, numbers begin to fall at Astros game. In one more sign that the apocalypse is at hand, the Houston media named Eddy Johnston as Houston’s Athlete of the Year, marking the first time that Houston sportswriters have elected an athlete from out of town as the award winner. It is also the first time the award winner did not come from MLB, the NBA, or the NFL.
Johnston has quietly been a force in the CBU, going 50-25 over the last three seasons, including a 20-7 record in 2006. Since coming up in 1997, he has 127 wins for the Bayhawks. “Nutball,” as he is affectionately called by his teammates, was the third overall pick for Galveston in the inaugural draft.
