Clarence Cox tosses 2nd Underdogs No-No

SP - Clarence Cox

September 14, 2003 – Four months after Todd McCarty’s no-hitter against the Dijon Moutarde, the Underdogs fans were treated to a second spectacular pitching performance. In Brainered Minnesota the Underdogs strung together a few hits that ended up turning into three runs in the 3rd inning and that is all they needed.

Cox started the game by pitching efficiently and ended up spreading 3 walks and 1 error over the 9 innings pitched with a total of 113 pitches. By the end of the game, Cox had a no-hitter. This feeling was not new to the young Underdog franchise, as staff Ace McCarty completed the same feat a few months earlier.

SP - Todd McCarty

“I was just in awe when McCarty was working his way through the no-hitter back in May. It was a real treat to watch one of the best pitchers in the CBU work his way through a game without allowing a hit. When I started the 7th inning tonight, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to match Todd.” -Clarence Cox

Match McCarty is exactly what Cox did. In McCarty’s no-hitter in May, McCarty also spread 3 walks through 9 innings while striking out five hitters. McCarty was slightly more efficient by using only 97 pitches, but both starts were wins for Sioux Falls, and new lines entered into the record books.

Unfortunately 2003 will likely go down as a year for the player performances, as the Underdogs have struggled to get above the .500 mark after 4 straight years in the playoffs. Without some improbably run, the Underdogs season is likely over at this point.
