The First Rumor: Goldstein speaks against MLB
April 1989: After being shut out in a deal to potentially get an expansion team in Nashville, Tennessee; entrepreneur Meyor Goldstein, delivered some interesting news to a reporter who caught him on the sidewalk outside of his office. After being told that MLB would not live in his home state, Goldstein left devastated and angry. An avid baseball fan and multi-millionaire, Goldstein had discussions in place in taking a potential expansion franchise in the next decade with the MLB.
When asked about his feelings, Goldstein stated, “They do not think that people love baseball here, I am Tennessee and I love baseball, the Nashville Sounds are one of the most popular minor league franchises around! Its all about the highest bidder to these guys, they do not care if the team is actually financially viable. If you have the most money you get what you want!”
The reporter asked if Goldstein planned on attempting something different, or finding any other funding partners, Goldstein jabbed, “We are done with MLB, the league is going to collapse under its own greed. Something will knock it from its pedastal, just you wait and see and Nashville plans on being a flagship of that process!”
The reported ended the discussion by asking, “Do you suggest another league is going to compete with MLB?”
Goldstein simply replied, “No comment.” and got into his car and drove away.
