$330 Million Dollar Stadium Investment Fails to Garner Goldstein a Team
-NEW YORK- Meyer Goldstein left the Commissioner’s Office of MLB today with barely a grunt and a shake of the head for reporters. Goldstein, who had put together a public private partnership with the city of Nashville and the state of Tennessee had hoped the new 330 million dollar, 48,000 seat stadium would be enough to convince Major League Baseball that Nashville was serious about supporting a team. Shortly afterward, Goldstein’s staff released a statement.
It has become apparent that the “Old Boys” club of MLB has no intention of allowing the fine city of Nashville to have a major league team, despite a brand new stadium that would be the jewel of the league and a rabid fan base, we have been led on, lied to and let down. This latest fiasco was the final straw. The Montreal Expos were a team whose cities demographic had changed and we were certain that Nashville would be a perfect place to make a new home for them. A home with plenty of support, great weather and fantastic facilities. Instead Washington D.C., a city that had TWICE failed to support a major league club gets yet another chance while Nashvillians are left in the cold. This is not over, the fan base of baseball still loves the sport but is fed up with the business. I’ve put my money where my mouth is while the MLB has put the tazpayers money in their own pockets. It is a business model that cannot last unless the owners give something back. My efforts will now be focused on finding like-minded individuals who value the sport of baseball, not the business. Folks who realize that baseball is part of a community and not a ledger. The new ballpark in Nashville WILL host baseball at some point, I promise you that.
Major League Baseball, as far as I am concerned, can go suck a d**k.
Thank you,
Meyer Goldstein
