Nashville Does Nothing

Team makes not even one signing in off-season

by Hare Bush, staff writer, The Tennesssean

They did nothing.  Absolutely nothing.

The Nashville Apostles went into the off-season with needs in their rotation, bullpen and around the infield but came out without a single new signing.

“Wasn’t worth the cost,” team owner Jason Wert told reporters.  “The greedy players were asking for outrageous contracts and those who were only slightly greedy would have cost us a draft pick.  I’m not giving up my team’s future for one overpaid aged veteran that will miss 10-20 games at the minimum ’cause every player in this league at least misses that much with an injury.”

Wert referenced the recent career ending injury of New Orleans player Luis Gonzales.

“Why go out and give up a draft pick only to have the guy be gone and our team out a draft pick?” Wert said.  “We’ll take our chances with what we’ve got.”

While the team called attention to it’s lack of free agent signings, league scouts were commenting on the depth of the Nashville farm system and that many of the holes the team had last season will be filled with kids from the farm.

“They really didn’t need to go out and sign anyone,” Rapid City’s head scout said anonymously.  “They may be a season away to give the kids seasoning but they’ve built for the future and it might come sooner than expected.”

Team owner Wert wouldn’t discuss the farm system with reporters leading to speculation he’s trying to take the pressure off the newcomers.

“What newcomers?” Wert said with a smile.  “We have some new guys in the press corps or something?”
