The Loser Is …
Let’s recap the first round of the CBU inaugural draft, just for sh*ts and giggles …
1 – West Tennessee – SP – Vincent ‘Clutch’ Gingras 20 starts 3-7 record, 3.60 ERA, 13 quality starts before a back injury. Good pick.
2 – Burlington – 1B – Angel Vazquez .316/.394/.604, 38 HR in a neutral park. Good pick.
3 – Redbank – 1B – Santiago Lopez .315/.378/.608, 29 HR. Broken ankle so just 112 GP. Good pick.
4 – Sioux Falls – INF – Bryan Wigmore. Yeah, we know. Good pick.
5 – Middletown – SP – Earl ‘Warlock’ Grant. 36 GS, 23 QS, .3.69 ERA, 213 K. Better pick if he re-signs. Still a good pick.
6 – Oshawa – CF – Jake Straub. .222/.312/.441, 25 HR. Broken ankle at 121 games. Dud pick.
7 – Orlando – RF – Carlos Moreno. .315/.407/.576, 31 HR. Missed a month with a muscle strain. Good pick.
8 – Rapid City – C – Tomas Perez. .284/.380/.491, 25 HR for a catcher. Good pick.
9 – Colorado – 3B – Blake Rankin. Yeah, we know. Huge home park advantage, but obviously a good pick.

11 – Whitehorse – SP – Gustavo Diaz. 29 GS, 20 QS, 8 in relief. 2.62 ERA. Good pick.
12 – High Point – SP – Alex Moss. 34 GS, 20 QS, 3.66 ERA. Good pick.

15 – Nashville – RF – Leon Valdez. 337/.395/.504, 17 HR. Good pick.
16 – Peoria - 1B – Emilio Lima. 279/.379/.503, 32 HR. Good pick.
There you have it boys and girls: 15 good picks and Jake Straub. Sounds like the next Apatow film …

Good write up, however Straub might not have been the best 5th overall pick we’ve ever seen, he suffered from a poor home park and a massive home/away split (over .100 OPS, and a dozen homers). Straub is likely also a 2-3 win player defensively in center field as well.
He’s far from dud.
I’m actually quite shocked at how well the 1st round guys actually did.
Yeah, but .221 from your first-rounder? The combination of low average and lots of home runs is like Dave Kingman or Rob Deere, except he can run and field. Still, he was on pace for 170+ K when he got hurt, and that’s a lot of empty outs.
I thought it would be more of a mixed bag when I started, honestly.
